In October 2020, the Prime Minister of Japan rejected 6 out of 105 candidates recommended by the Science Council of Japan (SCJ) without justification. This was the first rejection in SCJ’s history, despite its legal independence from the government. In response, 1162 legal scholars and the six rejected candidates asked the government to disclose the reasons. However, the government refused, claiming the document “does not exist.” A lawsuit was filed to overturn the non-disclosure decision and request state compensation.
