「われわれはいかなる者からの圧力にも屈しない。」ウクライナやパレスチナでの犯罪についてロシアのプーチン大統領やイスラエルのネタニヤフ首相らに逮捕状を発付するなど、国際社会における最も重大な犯罪の不処罰をなくすことを目指すICCには、近年その存在及び活動を快く思わぬ米国やロシアといった大国から強い圧力がかけられています。
しかし、日本人として初めてICCの所長となった赤根さんは、冒頭のように司法の独立を力強く宣言し、国際社会における法の支配の最後の砦たらんと日々奮闘されています。国際的な法の支配の危機と、それを守ろうとする人々。私たちには何ができるのか。オランダ・ハーグの地から、ICCの赤根智子さんにオンラインでお話しいただきました。

As part of the 7th Anniversary CALL4 Festival held on September 6, we hosted an online talk with Tomoko Akane, President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), from The Hague, Netherlands. The recording is now available. Please take a look.

“We will not bow to pressure from anyone.” The ICC, which aims to end impunity for the most serious crimes in the international community—including issuing arrest warrants for Russian President Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu regarding crimes committed in Ukraine and Palestine—has in recent years faced intense pressure from major powers such as the United States and Russia, which view its existence and activities with disfavor.
However, Ms. Akane, the first Japanese national to serve as Director of the ICC, has forcefully declared the independence of the judiciary, as stated at the beginning, and strives daily to serve as the last bastion of the rule of law in the international community. The crisis of the international rule of law and those who seek to protect it—what can we do? We spoke online with Ms. Tomoko Akane of the ICC from The Hague, Netherlands.
